Plus Size Wedding Underwear for beneath the Wedding Gown

Excellent! You’ve decided on and eventually found the wedding gown of your dreams. The hard work is not over though, you ought now to turn your attention to your bridal underwear for the big day. I always recommend that you should source your lingerie as soon as you’ve found your dress before your first proper dress fitting, as your wedding lingerie needs to work in harmony with both you and your gown. If, like myself, your cup size is bigger than an E or don’t have the figure of a supermodel, who does? You may struggle in high street department stores to find plus size wedding lingerie that suits both your own individual style and of course your dress. However, don’t panic, as there are options!

Traditional Wedding Corsets

A wedding corset is still quite a popular choice with many brides today as by their very design they offer very good support for the upper body and breasts. The other advantage is that they can have the effect of pulling you in at the waist by up to 2” – 4” giving a slimming effect on your outline, as long as the corset is properly fitted, of course. There are many strapless wedding corsets available that will compliment the many styles of strapless wedding gowns on the market today requiring a strapless wedding lingerie solution.

Floral Lace Corset

If you decide to go for a bridal corset as your wedding underwear then have a good look at the features before opting to buy. Look out for a deep décolleté at the front if you have a sweetheart dress, a nice low back fastening is often quite important for brides and how pronounced any of the boning or indeed any lace detailing may be. All of these factors you can only definitely check when you have your wedding underwear on with the dress.

Plus Size Bridal Bras

Bra design and manufacturing have improved greatly in recent years as companies have realised there’s a growing demand for larger cup sizes as well as bigger back sizes throughout the UK. More recently saw the release of a strapless bra in an L cup which has proven quite popular.

I myself opted for a plus size bridal bra for my wedding day as my dress was already boned throughout the bodice. This was a personal choice as I just don’t feel comfortable being braless, especially on my wedding day in front of all my guests! I find this to be quite a common thing with larger busted brides to want a bit more support and lift for their breasts when it comes to the wedding day.

Strapless Bridal Bra

A common problem again is making sure your bra suits the style of dress, for all there are many pretty, lace bridal bras breaking into the plus size lingerie categories they don’t always work well with your gown. I always recommend that you get properly measured, especially if you’re looking toward a plus size bridal bra and even a strapless bridal bra, support and comfort is going to help you get through the day. Your dress fitter should be able to help you with this.

Basques & Bustiers for the Plus Size Bride

If you’re looking for a little more support from your wedding underwear than a well fitted bridal bra can offer,  but aren’t a big fan corsets, then a bridal basque or wedding bustier is another option to consider. They tend to be a little more forgiving than a heavier boned bridal corset, offering a medium level of support for the upper body and they tend not to cover the hips. Although many designs of corset, basque & bustier often overlap one another, a bustier tends not to have any boning in the design or it is at least far less than the basque or corset. They can be a good alternative if you’re a bride that’s big on top and looking for more support, after all your wedding day should not be remembered for having your underwear digging in you every five minutes or for giving you backache!

Bridal Shapewear & Bodyshapers

Control underwear & bridal shapewear are just great practical solutions when it comes to bridal lingerie for beneath the wedding gown, leaving the romantic aspect of the underwear to one side for a moment. There are some great bridal bodyshapers that focus their slimming & toning effects to specific areas of the figure such as the thighs, bum, hips, tummy as well as the upper torso.

They achieve this by clever combinations of panelling and material technology to really hone the toning effects to the desired region. The big advantage that they don’t rely on a lot of heavy boning like your traditional corset, thus gives you more freedom of movement. Don’t worry about climbing out of your wedding dress on the first wedding night to reveal yourself to your newlywed in figure hugging shapewear, you can always opt for a nice white wedding chemise, babydoll or even bridal nightgown to relax in, for your first married night together as a married couple.

Wedding Lingerie Accessories

Never forget the finer details for your wedding day lingerie either. If you’re keeping with the something old, something new; something borrowed, something blue tradition then your bridal garter is the perfect candidate for your ‘something blue’. It can either have a little blue ribbon or blue bow and there are loads of fashionable, designer and indeed bespoke bridal garters to choose from. The bridal garter is often a nice wedding lingerie gift for your Chief Bridesmaid to get for you.

TOP TIP: If you are choosing hold ups or white wedding stockings for your wedding hosiery,  keep a spare pair on hand with a bridesmaid, even just a cheap pair, just in case you get any unwanted ladders or muddy splash marks on the day itself.
